On March 22, 1794, President Washington signed the Slave Trade Act into law. It was the first federal law to restrict slavery by making it illegal for American ships to engage in the international slave trade. Captains caught illegally transporting slaves faced fines of 2000 dollars per person. Despite this law, the domestic trade continued and foreign ships could still bring slaves to the country until later prohibitions were enacted.
