Near the end of 2024, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife counted 70 wolves in the state — up from just 44 in 2023. The agency reported at least 30 new pups, the highest number since wolves started coming back to California in 2011. CDFW wrapped up wolf capture and collar operations recently in northern California that resulted in a record-number 12 wolves now outfitted with satellite collars on the landscape. That collar data is expected to provide a wealth of information to better understand wolf movements, diet, dispersal, pack formations and help mitigate conflicts with livestock producers.
