Many say the sheng is the predecessor of some reed-instruments in Europe, such as the pipe organ, harmonica and the accordion. The ancient sheng musical instrument originated in China and was introduced to Japan over a millennium ago. While the Japanese sho has retained much of its traditional form, its Chinese counterpart evolved significantly over time, now featuring a three-octave range.
