Tropical activity is expected to gradually ramp up over the next few weeks as conditions become more favorable for development, forecasters say.

Tropical Storm Gabrielle formed Wednesday morning over the open Atlantic Ocean and is forecast to strengthen to hurricane force over the weekend, the National Hurricane Center said.

Most of the computer models that meteorologists use to forecast storms show Gabrielle staying far out to sea and not directly affecting U.S. shores.
