ARIZONA — Health officials have reported the first plague death since 2007, according to CBS News and the AP. Plague is generally rare in humans, as an average of seven cases are reported annually in the United States. The person who most recently died had the pneumonic plague and lived in Coconino County, Arizona.
The diease is mostly found in rural areas of northern Arizona, western Nevada, northern New Mexico, southern Colorado, California, southern Oregon, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
We first brought you the story of a deadly plague diagnosis in Flagstaff earlier this week. A patient arrived at the emergency room and lost their life to the pneumonic plague. Meanwhile, health officials are still searching for the source.
One person in Flagstaff died from the plague, but the Arizona Public Health Association says there's no need to worry. Doctors say it's very treatable and there are things you can do to protect yourself.
