Among those who were shocked by the deal was former Mavericks general manager Donnie Nelson. As general manager of the team from 2005-21, Nelson not only helped build the 2011 title team, but he also drafted Doncic in 2018. In a recent interview with Ekipa, Nelson broke down some of his feelings about Doncic’s sudden, unwanted departure.

Conversely, while James' future in L.A. still remains up in the air, it's expected that Doncic will re-sign with the team, according to ESPN's Dave McMenamin. The Lakers can offer Doncic a four-year, $229 million extension on Aug. 2, or he can sign a three-year, $165 million extension with a 2028 player option.
