A central part of Gov. Jeff Landry’s plan to revamp the state’s tax laws is struggling to gain the votes needed to pass, and some lawmakers have said the bill that would expand the sales tax to services and labor is dead in its current form.

Jeff Landry’s complicated tax package continued to power forward Wednesday as a key legislative committee approved more than $1 billion in new sales taxes. That money would mostly offset the House’s decision the day before to cut income taxes and repeal the corporate franchise tax.

Louisiana’s GOP-dominated House of Representatives has overwhelmingly passed individual and corporate tax cuts, along with a constitutional amendment.

Landry is asking legislators to lower income tax rates, triple the standard deduction and jettison the corporate franchise tax in exchange for raising more money from sales taxes and eliminating several tax subsidy programs, including tax credits for film producers and investors in historic buildings.

The Louisiana House passed a number of bills Tuesday that are part of Gov. Jeff Landry’s tax reform session. The foundational legislation, HB 1 lowers the personal income tax rate to a flat 3%.
