People are trying to smuggle eggs across the southern border, authorities said, as prices continue to increase amid a shortage caused by the bird flu.

As egg prices reach record highs, seizures at ports of entry have risen by nearly 30%, according to U.S. Customs and Border Protection. The spike came after an outbreak of avian flu led to the slaughter of millions of chickens across the U.

Since the start of the year, border officers in El Paso have encountered more than 90 people attempting to import eggs from Mexico.
