A rare deep-sea oarfish, also called a sea serpent, washed ashore near San Diego in Encinitas, and Scripps scientists are unsure what happened.

A rare oarfish, often called the "doomsday fish," was discovered on the shores of Grandview Beach in Encinitas, California. This marks the second sighting in the San Diego region this year, with the previous one occurring in August.
